A Sustainable Community
Starts Here.

Sustainability is a holistic approach to business operations.
An environmental-centered business diverts waste, saves water and energy, and promotes green transportation. But a sustainable business also has a diverse team and cares about their employees.

Practical steps are possible.

We understand that operating sustainably
is not a one-size-fits-all process.

Becoming a Certified Green Business is our goal. We are here to educate and empower you along the way. The Waco Green Business Alliance exists to foster a thriving ecosystem of businesses in the Greater Waco region. We work collaboratively with several private and public sectors to develop a robust certification process that is geared toward our community.

Our businesses are certified based on the 5 following categories:

  • Waste Diversion

  • Energy Conservation

  • Water Conservation

  • Transportation

  • Sustainable Actions

What we look for with our certification.

Waste Diversion

The atmosphere has naturally occurring greenhouse gases that trap heat from the sun and make the planet warmer (a good thing!). But humans have increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (a bad thing!).

In the US, landfills* are a large source of greenhouse gases. So diverting waste from the landfill helps Waco be more environmentally friendly.

Waste diversion practices that businesses can adopt include recycling, composting, reducing and reusing.

*The current City of Waco landfill will likely reach full capacity in 2025. The new landfill and transfer station will open soon after. The transfer station will increase the efficiency of solid waste collection. For more information, contact Solid Waste, or visit

Water Conservation helps preserve our regional water source, Lake Waco. The health of Lake Waco depends on the watershed northwest of our lake. If there is enough rain to saturate the groundwater, the watershed flows water into Lake Waco.

The current lake level and upcoming forecasts determine our city water restrictions.

We can all partake in water conservation to save money and ensure our water supply lasts longer. For more information and water conservation tips visit: https://www.waco-texas.com/Departments/Water-Utility-Services

Water Conservation

Transportation

Transportation generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions. This is from burning fossil fuels for our cars, trucks, ships, trains, and planes. Businesses can help reduce this by encouraging employees to carpool, use public transit, or bike to work.
